The 2026 PMP® exam outline: what changed and how to prepare

The PMP® examination content outline changed in July 2026. The exam still covers three domains, but their weighting shifted, most notably toward the business environment in which projects deliver value. This summary is independent; SkyLock Media is not affiliated with or endorsed by PMI.

The three domains and their weighting

The current outline weights the exam across three domains:

  • People: 33 percent.
  • Process: 41 percent.
  • Business Environment: 26 percent, up from 8 percent.

Why Business Environment matters more now

Business Environment covers how a project connects to the organization around it: governance, compliance, benefits and value delivery, and organizational change. With roughly a quarter of the exam now drawn from this domain, it can no longer be treated as an afterthought.

Practising the question formats

The exam uses more than standard multiple choice, including formats such as multiple response, matching and point-and-click items, plus scenario-based questions. Practising every format ahead of time removes surprises on exam day.

The 35 contact hours requirement

Candidates must document 35 contact hours of project management education to apply for the exam. Keep a record of your study hours and the provider's documentation.
