Predictive, agile or hybrid: choosing a project approach

Modern project management exams expect you to choose an approach to fit the project rather than apply one method everywhere. The choice follows from a few questions about the work itself. This summary is independent; SkyLock Media is not affiliated with or endorsed by PMI.

Predictive

Scope, schedule and cost are planned in detail early, and the plan is managed through formal change control. It suits work whose requirements are well understood and stable, where changes late in the project are expensive, such as construction or regulated deliverables.

Adaptive (agile)

Work is delivered in short iterations or a continuous flow, and the backlog is reprioritized as the team and customer learn. It suits work with uncertain or evolving requirements, where early feedback is valuable and deliverables can be released incrementally.

Hybrid

Hybrid combines the two, for example a predictive plan for hardware and regulatory milestones with agile delivery of the software inside it. Most real organizations work this way, and scenario questions often describe a situation where neither pure approach fits.

What drives the choice

Look for clues in the scenario:

  • How clear and stable are the requirements?
  • How costly is change once work is done?
  • Can value be delivered in increments?
  • How available is the customer or product owner for frequent feedback?
  • What do regulation, contracts and the organization's culture require?
